What is Orthanc for Heritage

Orthanc is a free and open-source, lightweight multimedia server developed for medical imaging. It is based on the DICOM standard.

A Belgian story

  • Development
Orthanc originates from Sébastien Jodogne's research work at the University Hospital of Liège (Belgium), in the Department of Medical Physics. Orthanc is now primarily developed and maintained by Orthanc Team, and by the research laboratory of Sébastien Jodogne in the ICTEAM research institute of UCLouvain.

ORTHANC for Heritage

We adapted ORTHANC to fit the requirements of the digital collections of the Museums

  • IIIF Compatibility
ORTHANC is now compatible with IIIF standard and images can be tilled on the fly or before to be encoded as DICOM.
  • Advanced 2D+ Vizualization
Specific viewers were developed for microscopic imaging, multispectral imaging and 360° visualization.
  • 3D models and 3D scenes
3DHOP was implemented for the vizualisation of 3D surface models with texture
  • 2D and 3D Internal structures
The StoneWeb and Volview viewers allow the discovery of CT and microCT datasets directly with the browser
